Building on the Foundations of Christ

Preacher:
Passage: Haggai 2:1-9
Service Type:

This was Bob Capper's final sermon as Vicar of St. Mark's, Gabalfa. He was celebrating the 40th anniversary of his ordination and his retirement as Vicar after 16 1/2 years at Gabalfa. It was eight days before St. Mark's was due to undertake a major building project. Appropriately, he talked about building God's Kingdom:

I. Psalm 127:1 - It is God's work, not ours.

II. 1 Corinthians 3 - pictures from gardening and building.

1. Partnership - Kingdom work is about partnership.
2. Succession - It was right for other leaders to carry on the work, building on the good foundation of Christ. We need to be faithful to the apostolic foundation.
3. Testing - we have little idea how church growth is really going. Will we prove to be faithful followers to the end? Make sure we hang on in.

III. Haggai 2.

“Be strong… all you people of the land, and work. For I am with you declares the Lord Almighty" (v.4).

“’The glory of this present house will be greater than the glory of the former house’, says the Lord Almighty. ‘And in this place I will grant peace’, declares the Lord Almighty.” (v.8)

You can find a transcript of the sermon as the PDF link below.

Bob appeared later as 'Bob the Builder' and talked to the children who had then joined us. He had appeared as 'Bob the Builder' in his first service at St. Mark's. He talked of building on the foundation of Jesus and how the children are the most important people as they will carry that building on to the next generation.

Note that the latter recording appears first in the list.
