Psalm 51

Preacher:
Passage: Psalm 51:1-19
Service Type:

This is greatest penitential psalm. It follows David's adultery with Bathsheba.
We have an instinct to deny that we have done anything wrong. We can fool ourselves, but not God.
In this psalm we learn about:
1. God
2. Repentance
3. Forgiveness
4. The joy of restored relationship.

With God there is no room for manoeuvre - there are no excuses. God forgives us according to his unfailing love.
There is no such thing as a victimless crime - all sin is ultimately sin against God. God doesn't compare us with each other, but with his perfect standards, and we all fail miserably. David is asking God to:
1. 'de-sin' him, to make him 'whiter than snow'.
2. He asks for restoration of relationship
3. He looked forward to a time when he would praise God.

None of us can stand in God's presence in our own righteousness.
