It's good to come as adults to the story of Joseph. The author does not see these chapters as being primarily about Joseph, but about Jacob's family.
Jacob was not a good role model.
Joseph was no saint, he knew how to make himself unpopular.
There is a lie as well as hatred at the heart of the family.
Their peace is bought by the suffering of the chief character.
The story shows God keeping his promised to Abraham.
If God can work in Jacob's family, he can work in us.

God's purpose is to bring blessing to the world outside the church.
God is keeping his promises.
Salvation will come from someone who seemed to have died, but a greater salvation from One who died and rose again.
