Worship Well is a service specially designed for people living with dementia and their carers.

Worship Well is planned as a monthly event for people living with dementia and their carers.
Due to the ongoing covid situation it has had to be cancelled for the time being. We hope to be able to restart it before long.
Many people will know of someone living with dementia. There are different types, but all involve multiple losses, frequently affecting the person’s memory and life skills. The numbers are increasing all the time. The people who come to Worship Well live either in the community with an informal carer or come from a Nursing Home with a careworker.

Secular services are under pressure and do not necessarily take into account the person’s spiritual needs. The idea behind this event is to give people who used to come to church but now find that difficult, due to e.g. the length of the service, or the use of unfamiliar language or music, an opportunity to Worship Well together with our volunteers, who are all from St Mark’s Church community.

Carers striving to care for the person they love, who may no longer be able to respond as previously, need to be able to access support for themselves. This event is planned so that carers’ needs are recognised too.

We start with a warm welcome with refreshments and the opportunity to chat.

Then we hold a very short church service, using traditional hymns and familiar readings and prayers. To give you an idea of what this looks like, you can find orders of service in the form of PDF files here:

Worship Well orders of service.

This is followed by a volunteer-led activity, such as singing or craft, and chat.

Carers may access support for themselves by talking to trained counsellors.

Then we eat a simple, home-made lunch together.

Where and when

St Mark’s Church, 206 North Road, Gabalfa, Cardiff CF14 3BL

First Friday of the month 10:30 – 12:30

The people who come join in the service, singing the hymns and saying the Lord’s Prayer. One person said that the event ‘brought back younger days.’ One couple got in touch to say how much they had enjoyed the hospitality and friendly faces and promising to come again.

Since the Covid-19 pandemic occurred, meeting physically has not been possible.

We pray that this ministry will be able to restart soon and grow as more people become aware of it.

Worship Well is an exciting service to the community. It welcomes people with dementia and their carers into the local church, where their spiritual, physical and emotional needs can be ministered to in a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

Ask and it will be given to you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you. Matthew 7:7
