Worship Well is a monthly event for people living with dementia and their carers.
Many people will know of someone living with dementia. There are different types, but all involve multiple losses, frequently affecting the person’s memory and life skills. The numbers are increasing all the time. The people who come to Worship Well live either in the community with a carer or come from a Nursing Home with a careworker.
Secular services are under pressure and do not necessarily take into account the person’s spiritual needs. The idea behind this event is to give people who used to come to church but now find that difficult, due to e.g. the length of the service, or the use of unfamiliar language or music, an opportunity to Worship Well together, to chat, enjoy activities and gain support. Carers striving to care for the person they love, who may no longer be able to respond as previously, need to be able to access support for themselves. This event is planned so that carers’ needs are recognised too.
A warm welcome is followed by a very short church service, using traditional hymns and familiar readings and prayers. Then there are activities, such as craft, reminiscence or singing, facilitated by our gifted volunteers. While the activities are taking place, informal carers have the opportunity to access support, through talking to trained counsellors in another room. Finally, we all come together for a shared home-made lunch.
Where and when
During lockdown, the church has been closed so we have been unable to host Worship Well. You can, however, find orders of service etc. in the form of PDF files here:
Worship Well orders of service.
The people who come are joining in the service, singing the hymns and saying the Lord’s Prayer. During the activities spontaneous singing has broken out, as people join in light- hearted songs remembered from the past. One person said that the event ‘brought back younger days.’ One couple got in touch to say how much they had enjoyed the hospitality and friendly faces and promising to come again.
Worship Well is therefore meeting its aim of providing an opportunity for people living with dementia and their carers to maintain their faith, have fun, access support and build relationships together. It is possible that some of the care workers may come as part of their job and hear spiritual truths for the first time.
We pray that this ministry will grow as more people become aware of it.
Worship Well is an exciting service to the community. It welcomes people with dementia and their carers into the local church, where their spiritual, physical and emotional needs can be ministered to in a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
Worship Well services are on the first Friday of the month, see below for details of the next service and the location.
